The rally went vertical. BTC is at $77,034, up more than 21% from last Monday's $63,492, with ETH at $2,444 (up nearly 29% on the week), SOL at $94, and XRP the loudest of all, up 47% over seven days. Fear & Greed has surged to 78, deep into Greed, from just 38 last Monday. The engine is still the Trump signal that the US may buy Bitcoin at scale. A reminder worth saying plainly at a moment like this: 78 on the Greed gauge is where risk is highest, not lowest, and it's a time to manage what you already own rather than chase. One regulatory note: the UK tax authority mailed roughly 81,000 warning letters to crypto holders about unreported gains, a reminder that as prices rise, so does the taxman's attention. HYPE watch update in David's Desk. Now, today's practical question: with four big Layer 2s to choose from, which one should you actually use?
🧭 Choosing a Layer 2
Four Good Options, and How to Pick the Right One for You
Back in July we explained what Layer 2s are and why Ethereum built them: separate chains that inherit Ethereum's security while cutting fees by 90 to 99%. Today is the practical sequel. There are four major L2s worth your attention, they all work well, and the differences that matter are not the fees (all pennies now) but the ecosystem, the decentralization, and the flavor of technology. Here's how to choose.
The Four at a Glance
| L2 | Type | TVL | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Arbitrum | Optimistic | ~$16B | Serious DeFi |
| Base | Optimistic | ~$11B | Beginners / consumer |
| Optimism | Optimistic | ~$5.6B | Consumer / Superchain |
| zkSync Era | ZK rollup | ~$4.1B | Fast exits / smart accounts |
Arbitrum: The DeFi Heavyweight
Arbitrum has the deepest DeFi liquidity of any L2 and the broadest selection of serious protocols, which is why power users doing perps, leveraged yield, and complex strategies gravitate to it. It's also the most decentralized of the group: it reached "Stage 1" with fully permissionless fraud proofs, meaning anyone can challenge a bad transaction, not just a trusted council. If you're going to do real DeFi, this is the safe default.
Base: The Easy On-Ramp
Base is Coinbase's L2, and it shows in the best way: it's the simplest path from a normal Coinbase account onto an L2, the cheapest to transact on, and the home of most of crypto's consumer and social experiments. It has grown into the most active L2 by users and daily transactions, second only to Arbitrum in total value locked. For a beginner, or anyone who wants the least-friction way into onchain apps, Base is usually the answer.
Optimism: The Superchain Bet
Optimism runs on the same technology that powers Base (the "OP Stack"), and its vision is the "Superchain," a whole network of interoperable L2s sharing standards. It skews toward consumer apps and is known for pioneering public-goods funding. It's a smaller ecosystem than Arbitrum or Base today, but the shared-standards bet is a serious one worth watching.
zkSync Era: The Next-Generation Option
zkSync is a different kind of rollup. Instead of the optimistic model's "assume valid, allow challenges" approach (with its roughly 7-day withdrawal wait), zkSync uses cryptographic validity proofs, so withdrawals back to Ethereum can be much faster. It also has native "account abstraction," meaning every wallet is a smart account by default, so features like paying gas in any token, session keys, and social recovery are built in rather than bolted on. The ecosystem is smaller, but the technology is a genuine glimpse of where wallets are heading.
📋 Pick Your L2 in 3 Questions
Ignore the cent-level fee differences. These are the choices that actually matter.
| 1 | Here mainly for serious DeFi? Go with Arbitrum. It has the deepest liquidity, the widest protocol selection, and the most decentralized security of the group. |
| 2 | A beginner, or want the easiest way in? Choose Base. It's the cheapest, it connects seamlessly to Coinbase, and it hosts the most beginner-friendly apps. |
| 3 | Want fast withdrawals and next-gen wallet features? Look at zkSync. Its ZK design avoids the 7-day exit wait, and native account abstraction brings social recovery and gas-in-any-token by default. (And if the Superchain vision appeals, Optimism is the ecosystem to watch.) |
📗 Ready to Actually Use One?
Once you've picked an L2, the next step is getting your funds there safely. Our step-by-step guide walks you through bridging from Ethereum mainnet to Arbitrum or Base using the official bridges, so your first move onto an L2 costs a cent instead of $30 and lands where you meant it to.

Episode 1: "He Didn't Hack the Wallets. He Was the Federal Agent Guarding Them."
We've launched a long-form video series that takes the scams and heists from our short clips and goes deep. Episode 1 is one of the wildest "the investigators were the criminals" stories in crypto history: the federal agents assigned to the Silk Road case who stole Bitcoin for themselves and pinned the theft on one of the site's own administrators to cover their tracks. No hacking required. They already held the keys. If you like our written breakdowns, you'll love watching this one unfold.

📋 From David's Desk
Quick HYPE watch update, and it's a good problem to have. The position I built by the rules is now up roughly 47% from my starter entry, with HYPE near $80. But Fear & Greed is at 78, deep in Greed, and my discipline in Greed is the mirror image of my discipline in Fear: I don't add here. Friday's second tranche was the last planned buy. From now on the job is managing the position, not enlarging it, and I'm starting to think about a plan for taking some profit if this goes truly parabolic, rather than looking for reasons to buy more near a local top. The full mechanics of how I handle that will show up clearly in the new portfolio format this Friday.
On today's topic: don't overthink the L2 choice. For most people it's Base if you want easy and cheap, Arbitrum if you want serious DeFi, and you can move between them anytime. The bigger point is that the fee war is essentially over, they're all pennies now, so the real questions are ecosystem and how easily you can get your money on and off. That, and using the official bridge, matters far more than saving a fraction of a cent.
Last thing, and I'm genuinely excited about it: we've started a YouTube series (see above). Episode 1 on the corrupt Silk Road agents is live, and new ones land every Tuesday and Saturday. These are the stories I most enjoy telling, the ones where the truth is stranger than any warning label. Give it a watch, and if it's good, share it with someone who'd find it fascinating.
📅 What's Coming This Week
Wednesday (Free all summer, Security): The $625M Ronin Hack, how North Korea drained an entire bridge by compromising a handful of validator keys. The largest bridge hack ever, and a masterclass in why key control is everything.
Friday (Premium, DeFi Deep Dive): Kamino Finance on Solana, and the debut of the new portfolio format: yield shown as real cashflow and compounding, the way it actually works. This is the v2 upgrade I promised.
📊 Where Premium Lives: Friday
Monday's fundamentals and Wednesday's security alerts are free all summer. Premium is Friday: the real-money portfolio I run in public (up big this week, and about to get a major reporting upgrade), the Scanner Watch protocol scores, and the full 12 Red Flags course. Start your first month for $4.95.
