⏱ How to Research Any Crypto Project in 20 Minutes
Week 45 · Crypto Fundamentals · Free Edition
A bruising week. Thursday's Binance hack, the largest crypto theft on record at about $6.3 billion, knocked Bitcoin below $77,000 before it steadied near $78,080, down about 2% on the week. Binance began reopening withdrawals in phases on Sunday, starting with Bitcoin, and says it will cover customer losses. The Bitcoin ETFs saw about $789 million leave on the latest day, and Fear & Greed sits at 36, in Fear. Weeks like this are when people go hunting for the next thing to buy, and when shortcuts get expensive. So today: a research routine short enough that you will actually use it.
⏱ "Do Your Own Research," Made Practical
Six Checks, Twenty Minutes, One Sentence at the End
"Do your own research" is the most repeated and least explained phrase in crypto. Most people hear it and either skip it or disappear into a weekend of YouTube videos. Neither works. What works is a short, repeatable routine that catches the big problems fast. You will not become an expert in 20 minutes. You will avoid most of the obvious disasters, which is where most of the money is lost.
Everything below uses free tools: CoinMarketCap or CoinGecko for the basics, DefiLlama for usage and hacks, and a block explorer for who holds the coins. Set a timer. If a project fails a check badly, you are allowed to stop early. That is the point.
Want to go deeper on a check? Past editions cover each one in full: reading a block explorer (Sep 14), real yield versus emissions (Sep 21), market cap versus FDV (Oct 19), and reading a whitepaper (our Oct 24 guide).
The Last Step Is the One That Matters
The sentence at the end is the part most people skip, and it is the most valuable. The first five checks keep you out of scams. The sentence keeps you out of your own way. It forces you to name why you own something before the price starts moving, so that when it does, you are following a plan instead of a feeling. Every position in my own model portfolio has that sentence written down, including when I would sell.
🛑 Stop Signs: End the Research Early
Any one of these, and you can close the tab.
| 1 | Someone found you first. A DM, a group invite, a stranger who "just wants to share." Good projects do not recruit buyers one message at a time. |
| 2 | A promised or guaranteed return. Nothing in crypto is guaranteed. A guarantee is a sales pitch, not a feature. |
| 3 | You cannot find who is behind it or what it does. Anonymous teams exist in good projects too, but anonymous plus vague is a pattern. |
| 4 | A few wallets hold most of the supply. They can sell into you whenever they like. |
One more lesson from last week: research does not stop at the coin. It also covers where you keep it. Thursday's hack did not touch a single bad token. It hit the biggest exchange in the world. Asking "who holds my coins, and what happens if they get hacked?" belongs on every checklist.
📗 Not Everyone Needs to Research Coins at All
If what you really want is Bitcoin exposure, a spot Bitcoin ETF skips most of this checklist, with its own tradeoffs. Our new guide explains what a Bitcoin ETF is, how it compares with holding Bitcoin yourself, and who each option fits. It also explains those big daily flow numbers you see in the market data.

I run some version of this routine on every protocol before it gets a Friday deep dive, and on every coin before it gets anywhere near my own book. Twenty minutes does not make me right. It makes me honest about what I know and what I am guessing. The one sentence at the end does most of the work, and more often than not it talks me out of things.
HYPE is a good example. My sentence for it, written before I bought, was about its revenue and how the supply schedule limited how much I should own. That is why it is a small position. It had a strong week, up about 13% to near $86, while most of the market fell. I did not add and I did not trim. At Fear 36, my rules say hold.
Pick one coin you own or are watching, set a timer, and run the six checks tonight. Then reply with your one sentence. I would like to read it.
