📈 Market Cap vs FDV: The Number That Fools Newcomers

Week 43 · Crypto Fundamentals · Free Edition

Another slow leak. Bitcoin sits around $82,682, down a little over 1% on the week, with Ethereum off more than 4% near $2,434 and Solana down over 6% to about $105. Fear & Greed has slipped to 49, just under the midpoint, with the ETFs seeing outflows again. In a market that keeps drifting, people go looking for bargains, and the most common way newcomers judge whether a coin is "cheap" is a number that can quietly hide most of the story. Today we look at the gap between what a coin is worth now and what it will be worth once every token exists.

📈 Two Numbers, One Coin

Why a Coin Can Look Cheap and Still Be Expensive

Market cap is the number on every price site: the coin's price multiplied by the tokens that are circulating right now. It answers one question, what is the part that exists today worth. Fully diluted value, or FDV, multiplies the same price by every token that will ever exist, including the ones still locked up for the team, early investors, and future rewards. It answers a different question: what would this coin be worth at today's price once all of those tokens are out.

When nearly all the tokens already exist, the two numbers are almost the same. When most of the supply is still locked, they can be far apart, and that gap is a preview of selling pressure to come. Every locked token that unlocks is a token someone can sell.

A Real Example From This Week's Board

Take two coins from today's market data. Bitcoin has about 20.09 million of its 21 million coins already in circulation, roughly 96%. HYPE, the Hyperliquid token, has about 254 million of its 1 billion tokens circulating according to CoinMarketCap, roughly a quarter. Other trackers count closer to 222 million, which makes the gap below even wider, and that difference is itself the lesson: look the numbers up yourself.

Bitcoin HYPE
Share circulating ~96% ~25%
Market cap ~$1.66 trillion ~$20 billion
Fully diluted value ~$1.74 trillion ~$79 billion
FDV / market cap ~1.05x ~3.9x

Bitcoin's two numbers are nearly identical, so there is no hidden supply waiting in the wings. HYPE's fully diluted value is close to four times its market cap. That does not make HYPE a bad project, it is one of the most profitable businesses in crypto. It means that for the price to merely hold steady as the rest of the supply unlocks, demand has to roughly quadruple. Most of those remaining tokens, including a large allocation for the core team that began vesting in late 2025, come out over the next few years on a schedule anyone can look up.

The Low-Float Trap

The extreme version is the new token that launches with only 5% or 10% of its supply circulating. A tiny float means a small amount of buying can push the price up fast, so the chart looks spectacular and the market cap looks modest. Meanwhile insiders hold the other 90% at a fraction of your price, and they get their tokens on a schedule. When those unlocks arrive, the people who bought the "cheap" market cap often discover they were the exit. The tell is always the same: a small market cap sitting on top of an enormous fully diluted value.

📋 Three Numbers to Check Before You Buy Any Token

All three are free on CoinMarketCap or a token-unlock tracker.

1 What share is circulating? Divide circulating supply by max supply. Above 80% means little hidden supply. Under 30% means most of the coin has not hit the market yet.
2 How big is FDV compared with market cap? Close to 1x is clean. Three or four times means demand has to grow a lot just to keep the price where it is.
3 When do the locked tokens unlock, and to whom? A large unlock to early investors next month is a very different risk from rewards trickling out to users over ten years. Look up the schedule before you buy, not after.

None of this tells you whether a coin will go up. It tells you what you are actually paying for. A coin with a big FDV gap can still be a good business, as long as you buy it knowing the supply is coming, size it accordingly, and do not mistake a small market cap for a small price.

📋 From David's Desk

I used HYPE as today's example on purpose, because I own it. When I bought it, I knew three quarters of the supply had not been released yet, and that is a big part of why it is a small position in my book rather than a large one, entered in tranches by rules. I believed in the business. I also knew the supply schedule was working against the price, and I sized for both.

As Friday's scorecard showed, HYPE has given back almost everything it gained since this portfolio launched, and it sits near $79 this week. It is still above both prices I paid. It is untouched, and at Neutral 49 my rules say neither add nor trim. Unlocks are not the only reason a price drifts, but they are a quiet, steady pressure, and knowing that in advance is the difference between a plan and a surprise.

If you take one habit from today: before you call any coin cheap, check its fully diluted value. Cheap is a price per token. Expensive is how many tokens are still coming.
