Where Does That APY Come From?
You see a DeFi pool advertising 47,000% APY and think "this can't be real." You're probably right. But understanding why requires knowing where yield actually comes from.
Think of yield farming like being a market maker at a farmer's market. You set up a booth with apples and oranges, and customers trade with you all day. You earn money from:
- Trading fees (0.25-0.30% per swap in most pools)
- Token rewards (the protocol pays you to provide liquidity)
- Price appreciation (if the reward tokens go up)
Sustainable yield comes from real economic activity — people actually trading through your pool. But those eye-popping APYs? They're usually from massive token rewards that the protocol is printing to bootstrap liquidity.
Our scanner flags Red Flag #3 (Impossible APY Promises) when APY exceeds 100% without clear revenue sources. Here's why: if a pool needs to pay 47,000% APY to attract liquidity, either the tokens are worthless or the pool is about to collapse from impermanent loss.
Real yield farming targets 10-30% APY from established protocols with genuine trading volume. Anything higher requires understanding exactly where those rewards come from and how long they'll last.
💡 Real-World Example
Remember the Iron Finance TITAN/USDC pool that briefly hit 2,000,000% APY? That should have been an immediate red flag. The yield came entirely from freshly minted TITAN tokens — no real economic activity.
When TITAN's price started dropping, the algorithmic stablecoin IRON lost its peg. This triggered a death spiral: more TITAN minted to back IRON, more selling pressure, lower prices, more minting. The pool collapsed in 48 hours.
Compare that to the Uniswap ETH/USDC pool, which consistently pays 5-15% APY from real trading fees. Lower yield, but it's been stable for years because the revenue comes from genuine economic activity, not printed tokens.

Before entering any yield farm, identify all three yield sources: trading fees, token rewards, and price appreciation potential. If you can't clearly explain where 80% of the APY comes from using real numbers, don't farm it.
