When Politicians Shill Crypto, Run the Other Way

Remember when New York City Mayor Eric Adams took his first three paychecks in Bitcoin? January 2022. He called himself the "Bitcoin Mayor." He was going to make NYC the "center of cryptocurrency innovation."

Fast forward to January 14, 2026: Adams is facing multiple criminal charges including bribery and wire fraud. His Bitcoin paychecks? Converted to USD within days through Coinbase. The "center of innovation"? Never materialized.

This is the scam nobody talks about: political crypto theater.

The Most Dangerous Crypto Endorsement

Everyone warns you about fake celebrity giveaways and rug pulls. But nobody warns you about politicians using crypto as PR stunts. This is arguably more dangerous because it comes with an aura of legitimacy.

Here's the pattern I've noticed since 2017:

🚩 Red Flag #1: Politicians Timing Bitcoin Hype Cycles

The Setup: Politician announces they're "taking salary in Bitcoin" or making their city "crypto-friendly" right at market peaks. Adams did this in January 2022 when Bitcoin was around $43K. Miami Mayor Francis Suarez did it in November 2021 when Bitcoin hit $69K.

What Actually Happens: They immediately convert to fiat through exchanges, but the announcement drives media coverage and retail FOMO. By the time regular people buy in, the politician has already cashed out and moved on to the next PR stunt.

The Tell: They announce publicly but convert privately. Adams' Bitcoin paychecks went straight to Coinbase for USD conversion—this came out in court documents.

🚩 Red Flag #2: Vague "Innovation" Promises

Watch for politicians who promise to make their city/state a "crypto hub" without specific policy proposals. Real crypto-friendly policy looks like:

Specific tax treatment clarifications
Clear regulatory frameworks
Actual infrastructure (mining-friendly energy policies, etc.)

Political Theater looks like: Photo ops with Bitcoin logos, vague tweets about "innovation," and zero follow-through. NYC didn't become a crypto hub under Adams. Nothing changed except his publicity.

🚩 Red Flag #3: Timing = Top of the Market

This is the pattern that keeps repeating:

2021: Politicians pile into Bitcoin at $60K+ (Nov 2021 peak)
2022: Adams converts his Bitcoin salary in January at $43K
2022-2023: Complete silence during the bear market
2024-2025: Bitcoin recovers, suddenly politicians are "crypto-friendly" again
2026: Adams facing criminal charges, Bitcoin PR stunt looks particularly bad

The lesson: When politicians start talking about crypto, it's usually near a local top. They're not leading—they're following retail hype for publicity.

The Real Scams to Watch in 2026

The Eric Adams situation reminded me: the most dangerous scams come wrapped in legitimacy. Here are the ones I'm seeing right now that most people miss:

1. "Government-Backed" Crypto Projects

Projects claiming government endorsement or partnership. Unless you can verify it through official .gov sources, assume it's fake. Politicians taking salaries in Bitcoin ≠ government endorsement.

2. "Institutional Grade" DeFi With No Audit

Projects launching with major hype, professional websites, and promises of "institutional security"—but when you dig, there's no smart contract audit from reputable firms (CertiK, Trail of Bits, OpenZeppelin, Quantstamp).

Recent Example: December 2025, a protocol called "MetaYield" launched promising 45% APY on stablecoin deposits. Professional site, big Telegram group, even some influencer endorsements. No audit. Rug pulled $12M in 72 hours.

3. Testnet-to-Mainnet Bait-and-Switch

This is the one I almost fell for again in November 2025. Project works perfectly on testnet (fake money, no risk). Community is excited. Then mainnet launch happens and suddenly:

Contract has different code than testnet version
Withdrawal functions "temporarily disabled"
Anonymous team disappears

How I caught it: I ALWAYS verify the mainnet contract address matches what was audited. In this case, it didn't. Saved me from losing my test positions.

Your Protection Protocol

I developed this checklist after losing money to BitConnect in 2017 and nearly losing everything again in 2024:

✅ Before Any Investment:

1. Verify Smart Contract Audit

Must be from reputable firm (CertiK, OpenZeppelin, Trail of Bits, Quantstamp)
Audit must be recent (within 6 months)
Check if audit is for the ACTUAL deployed contract (compare addresses)
Read the audit—look for "Critical" or "High" severity issues

2. Check Contract Permissions

Can anyone pause withdrawals? (Red flag)
Is there an "admin" wallet with excessive control? (Red flag)
Are there timelocks on admin functions? (Good sign)
Use tools like DeFi Safety or rugdoc.io to check

3. Verify Team Identity

Are founders doxxed (publicly identified)?
Do they have LinkedIn profiles with real work history?
Have they built successful projects before?
Anonymous teams = higher risk (not always scam, but be careful)

4. Test With Minimum Amount First

Deposit smallest amount possible
Immediately try to withdraw it
If withdrawal works smoothly, consider depositing more
If withdrawal is "locked" or delayed, RUN

Why I Wrote the Book

The Eric Adams story pisses me off because political theater makes legitimate crypto projects look bad. But more importantly, it shows how sophisticated the manipulation has become.

Your Action Items This Week

1. Audit Your Current Holdings

Go through each DeFi position you have. Can you verify the smart contract audit? Do you know who controls the admin keys? If you can't answer these questions, you're taking unnecessary risk.

2. Set Up Position Limits

Never put more than 5% of your crypto portfolio into any single DeFi protocol, no matter how "safe" it seems. This saved me in 2024—when that protocol dumped, I only lost 3% instead of 80%.

3. Build Your Exit Strategy

For every position: What would make you exit immediately? Write it down. "If APY drops below 20%" or "if TVL drops 50%" or "if team goes anonymous." Having exit rules prevents emotional decisions during a rug pull.

Remember: The Eric Adams situation is a reminder that reputation and publicity mean nothing without substance. Do your own verification. Trust the code, not the hype.
