🔒 Hardware Wallet Scams: Fake Devices and Phishing Letters

Week 44 · Security Update · Free Preview · Full Breakdown Premium

🔍 Following On From Monday

Monday's lesson ended with Bitcoin sitting in cold storage, untouched through the swings. A hardware wallet is the usual answer to "how do I keep it safe?" This month showed how attackers go after the answer itself: not by breaking the device, but by getting to you before it is ever yours.

⚠ Threat Brief

On October 9, hundreds of Ledger owners in Southeast Asia woke up to empty wallets. Every confirmed case traced back to devices sold by one reseller, CryptoBilis. Someone had opened those devices before sale and hidden a tiny circuit board under the screen, with its own cell connection, that read the 24-word recovery phrase as it was displayed during setup and sent it to the attacker. The devices reportedly arrived in intact shrink wrap and passed Ledger's own authenticity check. On-chain researchers put the losses at about $93 million across more than 300 wallets. Ledger says its own systems and direct sales were not compromised. The single most important thing to know: the moment your recovery phrase appears, whatever can see it owns your coins.

Hardware wallet attacks almost never break the secure chip. They go around it, at the two moments the device cannot protect you: before it reaches your hands, and whenever someone convinces you to type your recovery phrase somewhere else. That second one arrives by mail. Official-looking letters on Ledger and Trezor letterhead have been landing in mailboxes, warning of a "mandatory check" and a deadline, with a QR code that leads to a fake setup page asking for your phrase. So the rule is simple: buy only from the manufacturer, and treat any request for your recovery phrase, from anyone, through any channel, as a theft in progress. And if you already set up a device you are unsure about, a new device alone will not save you. The phrase is what gets stolen, so you need a new device and a brand-new phrase.

⚠ Yield Trap of the Week · Red Flag: A Safe Pair in a Range Thinner Than a Hair

WETH / cbBTC on Aero: about 200% in AERO rewards

As of Wednesday morning, this pool pays roughly 200% a year in AERO rewards, with about $5.7 million staked. No microcap, no wobbly stablecoin, just Ether and Bitcoin, the two bluest chips on the board. It looks like the safest high yield of the week.

Read the fine print. That rate only holds inside a price range about 0.2% wide, while these two coins typically drift about 5% against each other in a normal week. Step outside the range and the rewards stop. The pool is one week old, born with Aero's launch, and it pays in AERO, a token that swings hard. Full disclosure: I moved my own liquidity to Aero last week, in a much wider range, and I report what it actually earns every Friday. Launch rewards are real, but the headline number assumes you never leave a range most people cannot stay in.

I pulled every pool on Base and Arbitrum paying over 40% with at least $1 million in it. This week there were 25, down from 50, largely because the Aero merger switched off the old Aerodrome reward streams.

Before I look at any yield, I ask three questions. Is every coin in the pool actually holding its value? How much of the pool is really earning the headline rate? And what am I being paid in? If I cannot answer all three, the APR does not matter.
