💻 Device Hygiene: Your Crypto Machine Is the Target

🔍 Following On From Monday
Monday we zoomed out to the three forces that move the whole market, macro, ETF flows, and leverage. Today we zoom all the way in, to the single device you hold your crypto on. Because the most expensive attacks do not touch the market at all. They live on your machine, and they are patient.
⚠ Threat Brief
Microsoft is tracking a Windows malware strain it calls CryptoBandits, spreading through infected USB drives since February. It does something quietly devastating: it watches your clipboard, and the instant you copy a wallet address to paste into a transaction, it swaps in the attacker's address instead. The address looked right when you copied it. You paste, you approve, and the money is gone to a stranger. The same family also scrapes seed phrases typed on the machine. You did not click a bad link or fall for a story. You just pasted, on a computer you thought was clean.
It reaches a machine the ordinary ways: a USB stick, a cracked app, a "free" trading bot, a careless download. Then it sits silent until the one moment you move money. Here is the rule that defeats it, and you only need one: your copy-paste cannot be trusted, so the only address that counts is the one shown on your hardware wallet's own screen when you approve. Read it there, every time. If you cannot verify it on the device, do not send.
⚠ Yield Trap of the Week · Red Flag: A Rate That Needs a Volatile Token to Hold Still
WETH / DRV on Aerodrome: 416% in rewards
Near the top of the yield boards this week, as of Wednesday morning, sits a pool paying about 416% in AERO rewards on top of roughly 420% in swap fees, close to 840% all-in, with around $1.6 million in it, paired against ETH. A number that large makes people stop scrolling.
Here is what it is really saying. That rate only holds while DRV, a volatile microcap near 44 cents, stays inside roughly an 8% price band. DRV has been swinging more than 50% in a typical week. A token that moves fifty points does not sit politely in an eight-point box, so you fall out of range within days and are left holding a falling microcap while the headline rate keeps advertising to the next person. The market does not pay 840% for safe. It pays it for risk it needs someone else to warehouse.
I pulled every pool on Base and Arbitrum paying over 40% with at least $1 million in it. This week there were 46.
Before I look at any yield, I ask three questions. Is every coin in the pool actually holding its value? How much of the pool is really earning the headline rate? And what am I being paid in? If I cannot answer all three, the APR does not matter.
